What is your personal development plan? Are you becoming a better person everyday?
These are simple, but often difficult questions to answer. Most people have not picked up a non-fiction book since graduating from either high school or college. If you are asking yourself: What is a non-fiction book well you better keep reading because you need a personal development plan.
How to set up a personal development plan?
I have to admit I did not have a personal development plan for about 5 to 6 years after graduating from college. I never heard of Napoleon Hill, Dale Carnegie or Ken Blanchard. All of these names were foreign to me. If these names are foreign to you maybe you should go to Amazon.com to find out about their books.
These authors look to answer this question: How can you (the reader) improve your life through personal development? High school and college will never teach a course about personal development or how to improve your life. Do you know why? Most of the teaches or professors have not heard of or read a book by Napoleon Hill or Dale Carnegie.
Depend on Yourself For Your Plan
To set up a plan you need to decide you are going to read at least 15 to 30 minutes a day from a personal development book. It could be one of the authors I mentioned earlier or one you find on your own.
I have developed the habit of writing down authors mentioned in books I am reading. Isn’t it amazing authors of development books read other authors of personal development books? Writing down author’s references to other authors is a great way to find additional books.
When you are reading become an active reader. An active reader is one who highlights or takes notes while reading. Yes, you need to buy the book from a bookstore if you are writing in the book. You cannot check a book out of the library. However, I do check some books out of my local library before making a purchase. By purchasing your own copy you are creating your own library. One you can reference at anytime for additional inspiration.
Life Long Plan
The other part of the plan is to realize the plan is a lifelong plan. It is not like school where you eventually graduate and no longer attend.
Reading books will help collapse time frames because you can learn from the author’s successes and failures. Why not read a book over the course of a week or two from someone who studied a topic for 5 or 6 years? This is the definition of working smarter than working harder.
The final part of personal development plan is to realize there is a financial and time cost. Remember we are investing in ourselves, which is the most priceless object we will ever own. We are the best investment in the world. At least I hope you are worth investing in yourself.
Change Does Not Happen Overnight
Reading one book will not make you a better person overnight. You need to be willing to invest months and years of study. One author, Bob Proctor, said he has been studying personal development for the past 40 years and is still learning to this day.
Wouldn’t it be great to keep learning more and more about yourself and how to accomplish more in your life? A personal development plan and action on the plan is a key to your success. The reason I can state this as a key to success is many people before you and I have found it to be true.
